A.I.R. Gallery (Artists in Residence, Inc.) is a feminist, not-for-profit, artist-run cooperative gallery for women, femmes and non-binary artists. As a collective, A.I.R. maintains a permanent exhibition space and exhibits the work of hundreds of artists each year. A.I.R. fosters a multiplicity of voices in the arts, facilitates intergenerational dialogue, continues investigations of feminism, and bridges art and activism. Founded in 1972, A.I.R. builds on its history while it seeks to expand the responsibility of a feminist space by supporting artists across a spectrum of intersectional identities and cultural perspectives.

For its annual postcard show—to be held from June 28 to July 28, 2024—A.I.R. Gallery is issuing an open call for submissions that engage with this year’s theme focusing on the climate crisis. The show borrows its title from a Chinese Proverb: “The best time to plant a tree was twenty years ago. The second best time is now.”

Climate activists are pursuing transformational change with a clear and urgent message: act now to protect people and save our planet from the worst impacts of the climate crisis. Addressing the environmental crisis requires collaboration, creativity, and positive solutions on the part of citizens working in other fields, including artists. Artists’ activism has taken many forms, from posters and demonstrations to radical actions and fundraising. We particularly encourage submissions that explore the intersection of gender and the environment. As Katherine Wilkinson writes in The New York Times, “Climate change is a collective problem but its burdens—displacement, homelessness, poverty, sexual violence, disease—weigh more heavily on women and girls.”

We invite artists to participate by donating a postcard-sized work (4 x 6 inches) in any medium relating to the theme of climate change. Each original work will be sold for $45 and proceeds will benefit A.I.R. Gallery’s mission to advance the status of women and non-binary artists.

Submissions must be dropped off at or mailed to A.I.R. Gallery (155 Plymouth Street, Brooklyn, NY 11201) no later than June 21, 2024 to be included. Please note that donated artworks will not be returned following the close of the exhibition so please take this into account when choosing what to submit.

Entry is FREE and ALL WORKS ARE ACCEPTED!
